Antisana Ecological Reserve


Location – Antisana Ecological Reserve is situated in the Napo and Pichincha provinces in Ecuador region along the snow capped Antisana volcano peaks in the Andes.

Area – It covers 120.000 hectares / 296527 acres of area.

Altitude Range – Altitude ranges from 1400 to 5,704 meters (4593 – 18,714 feet) above sea level.

The Antisana Ecological Reserve was built in the month of July in the year 1993. It was built with the purpose of protecting unique local flora and fauna of the region. Antisana volcano which is the 4th largest volcano of Equador is surounded by this ecological reserve. Rivers Napo and Coca flow through the North and Southeast areas and constitute a part of this region.

Antisana Ecological Reserve is home to a world of unique flora and fauna. One can take sight of several rare plants and animals in and around the reserve area. The climatic conditions in the region are very extreme with low temperatures, low precipitation, high blowing winds and low oxygen levels. But, the animal and plant life have very nicely adapted to such adverse environmental conditions. Antisana ecological reserve is notable for beautiful birds like Andean Gulls, Black-faced Ibis, Brown Speckled Teal, Silvery Grebe and others. Several endangered and rare flora and fauna can be found here, they include:

Antisana Ecological Reserve is a great tourist attraction with its snow capped peaks, spectacular landscapes, wild life, lakes and enchanting scenery, with the Antisana mountain itself being the biggest attraction. Several trekking and excursion tours are available in the region. One-day excursions are hugely popular with the visitors.
